Have you ever visited a hookah lounge? A Hookah, with origins in the Middle East, is another name for a water pipe. It is either a single or multiple stemmed apparatus used for smoking tobacco. Various flavors of tobacco, such as peach, mint or apple, are traditionally smoked in the hookah. The molasses infused tobacco, placed in a bowl above the water, is covered with a screen filled with smoldering charcoal. The resultant smoke cools down when it passes through the water basin before being inhaled.

Hookah originated about 500 years ago in India, where it started out as a basic water pipe made from a coconut shell. The popular smoking tradition made its way to Iran and then Turkey. Modern day hookahs are fancy affairs made of glass and decorative metal. In certain countries, the hookah is more commonly called an arguileh. Other variations include shisha, nargile, narguileh and hubble-bubble.

Hookah bars abound in the south Florida area. Leila, a Mediterranean style restaurant in West Palm Beach, offers hookah as part of its entertainment options.  Partake in traditional hookah at Leila after enjoying Middle Eastern cuisine from our extensive lunch and dinner menu.

Note: Hookah is not meant for use by anyone under the age of 18 in most states. The states of Alabama, Alaska, New Jersey and Utah; along with certain counties in New York, have risen the smoking age to 19 years.
